Dental Implants Q&A

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a titanium post that replaces your natural tooth root. Your HP Dental provider inserts the implants into spaces in your jaw where your permanent teeth used to be.

After surgery, the implants fuse with your bone, providing a sturdy base for crowns, bridges, or implant-retained dentures. Further, implants look and feel like your natural teeth, ensuring that nobody knows they’re artificial.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants offer various benefits, including:

  • Comfort
  • Durability
  • Clearer speech
  • Improved oral hygiene
  • Confidence

Dental implants are also convenient. You don’t have to remove or soak them in a cleaning solution like dentures.

What does getting dental implants involve?

At HP Dental, getting dental implants takes three visits.

First dental implant visit

Your dentist reviews your dental records, performs an oral exam, and takes a series of X-rays. If you’re missing one or more permanent teeth and you have enough jaw bone to support the implants, you qualify for treatment. Your dentist numbs your mouth and inserts the titanium posts into the empty spaces in your jaw.

After surgery, you return home to recover while the implants fuse with your bone.

Second dental implant visit

When your mouth finishes healing, you visit HP Dental for a second visit. Your dentist uses an intraoral scanner to take precise, digital impressions of your mouth. They send the impressions to a dental lab. Technicians at the lab use your impressions to design and create custom restorations.

Third dental implant visit

After the lab completes your restorations, you visit HP Dental for the last time. Your dentist attaches the restorations to the implants and explains how to care for them.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants last for 15 years on average and often even longer*. To ensure your implants stay in optimal condition, HP Dental recommends brushing your teeth twice daily, flossing regularly, and visiting the dentist every six months for professional teeth cleaning and an oral exam.
